Learn Hebrew with Eitan

Lesson One

א Aleph

The Silent Letter, the Breath Before Creation

═════════════════════════════

"Before you learn to speak, you must learn to be silent. This is not a paradox. This is a prerequisite."

— E.C.

What is א?

Pronunciation: Silent (glottal stop—the moment your throat gently closes and opens) Numerical value: 1 (can also represent 1000) Meaning: Beginning, source, potential

Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, but it makes no sound.

A language that begins with silence.

Jewish mysticism teaches: before creation, there was only silence.

Aleph is that threshold—the boundary between silence and speech.

It's the moment before you open your mouth, when breath gathers in your chest.

[Ed.] A letter that makes no sound seems counterintuitive for a language course.

[E.] Then you're already learning.

[Ed.] Learning what?

[E.] That Hebrew will dismantle your assumptions. One by one.

Astra's Notes

א = Aleph Sound: None (glottal stop) Number: 1

There's no phrase to practice because it makes no sound.

Just breathe. That's Aleph.

...He's turned a language course into meditation. I'd complain, but it's working.

— A.
