ו Vav The Hook, or: Why Connection is a Form of Creation

What is ו?

Pronunciation: V (modern) / W (ancient) Numerical value: 6 Meaning: Hook, nail

Look at the shape of this letter—ו.

A vertical line. Like a nail. Like a hook. A tool for joining two things together.

This is what Vav does: **connect**.

In Hebrew, adding ו to the front of a word means "and": - שֶׁמֶשׁ (shemesh) = sun - וְיָרֵחַ (v'yareach) = and moon

One letter. Linking two worlds.

Vav in Genesis

Almost every sentence in Genesis chapter one begins with ו:

וַיֹּאמֶר (Vayomer) = And He said וַיְהִי (Vayehi) = And there was וַיַּרְא (Vayar) = And He saw וַיְהִי־עֶרֶב (Vayehi-erev) = And there was evening

"And then... and then... and then..."

Creation is not a single event. It's a series of connections. Each Vav is a hook, fastening one moment to the next.

Without Vav, Genesis isn't a story. Just a pile of isolated sentences.

Words beginning with Vav: - וְ (V' / Ve) = And - וֶרֶד (Vered) = Rose - וִידּוּי (Vidui) = Confession

Interestingly: וִידּוּי (confession) begins with Vav. Confession is a form of connection—linking a hidden truth to another person.
