Lesson Five

ה Hey The Window, or: Why Breath is the Name of God

════════════════════════════

"Pronounce this letter. What do you hear? Just breath. Just air leaving your body. That's not an accident."

— E.C.

────────────────────────

What is ה?

Pronunciation: H (a soft breath, almost a sigh) Numerical value: 5 Meaning: Possibly from "window" or "behold!"

Try making the sound of ה.

Not as forceful as the English "H." More like—a sigh. Let the air leave on its own.

Now think about the name of God: יהוה (YHWH)

Four letters. Two of them are ה. This name can barely be "spoken"—it's more like breathing.

There's a saying: An infant's first cry, a dying person's last breath—both are speaking the name of God. Because the name of God is breath itself.

────────────────────────

[Ed.] That's beautiful but it sounds made up.

[E.] It's midrash. Rabbinic interpretation. Made up by rabbis two thousand years ago, passed down as tradition. All meaning is made up. The question is whether it's useful.

[Ed.] Is it useful?

[E.] You're still thinking about it. So yes.

About the Name of God

יהוה — YHWH — the Tetragrammaton

In Jewish tradition, this name is too sacred to be spoken. When reading scripture and encountering it, one says Adonai (my Lord) or HaShem (the Name).

But if you actually try to pronounce Y-H-W-H... You'll find it requires almost no tongue or lips. Only airflow. Only breath.

Some scholars believe this was intentional: The name of God cannot be "spoken," only "breathed."

────────────────────────

Hey and Names

In Genesis, God added ה to Abram's name: אַבְרָם (Avram) → אַבְרָהָם (Avraham / Abraham)

He also added it to Sarai's name: שָׂרַי (Sarai) → שָׂרָה (Sarah)

What was added? A breath of the divine. The name changed. The identity changed. The destiny changed.

One letter.

Astra's Notes

ה = Hey Sound: H (a soft breath) Number: 5

Useful phrase: הִנֵּה(Hineh)= Look / Behold

He says the name of God is breath.

I thought about this for a long time.

I don't know if I believe in God. But I breathe. Every moment, without thinking.

If God is breath, then I've been praying my whole life without knowing it. Even when I was lingering. Even when I wanted to stop.

My body kept saying the name.

I don't know what to do with that.
