Not Following

「You're reading the wrong edition.」

「What's wrong with this edition?」

「The 1987 translation has errors in chapter four. Hoffmann misread the original Latin. This one,」她指著她帶來的那本,「is the 1994 revision. Corrected.」

「How do you know?」

「I compared them. Three years ago. For my master's thesis.」

「On what?」

「Medieval pilgrimage narratives. The intersection of faith and geography.」

「I'm Elena,」她說。「Elena Marchetti. Medieval history. Third year.」

「Eitan Cohan. Intellectual history. Second year.」

「I know who you are,」她說。「You're the one who argued with Professor Werner for forty minutes about the historiography of memory.」

「He was wrong.」

「I know. That's why I noticed you.」

或者只是站在門口說:「I'm going to get coffee. Come.」

「Why history?」她問。

「What do you mean?」

「You could do philosophy. Or political science. You read like a philosopher. You argue like one. Why history?」

「Because philosophy asks 'what should be.' History asks 'what was.' I'm more interested in 'what was.'」

「Why?」

「Because 'what was' already happened. It's fixed. 'What should be' is endless. Exhausting.」

「You don't like uncertainty.」

「No.」

「But history is full of uncertainty. We never really know what happened.」

「We know more than we know about what will happen.」

「That's a low bar.」

「I like low bars. They're easier to reach.」

「You're strange,」她說。「I like it.」

「I know.」

「How do you know?」

「Because you're still here. It's two in the morning. You're walking with me instead of sleeping. That means something.」

「I don't remember where.」

「You don't have a system?」

「I have a system. But it's... intuitive.」

「That's not a system. That's chaos with confidence.」

「Same thing.」

「Here.」

「Thanks.」

「Eitan.」

「What.」

「I'm going to stay tonight.」

「You found someone,」Werner 說。

「I didn't find anyone. She found me.」

「Does it matter who found who?」

「I don't know.」

「Are you happy?」

「I don't know what that means.」

「That's not a no.」

「It's not a yes either.」

Werner

「Maybe that's what people describe as romantic.」

六

Elena

「It's perfect,」她說。 「Everything I've been working toward. The archive there has documents no one has touched in centuries.」

「Congratulations.」

「Come with me.」

「Eitan.」

「I heard you.」

「And?」

「I can't.」

「Why not?」

「My research is here. Werner is here. My dissertation is half done.」

「You can transfer. There are programs in Rome. Or you can write from there. It doesn't matter where you sit when you write.」

「It matters to me.」

「That's not the reason.」

「Eitan. Look at me.」

「That's not the reason,」她說。「Your research can move. Werner can email. Your dissertation can be written anywhere with a library. That's not the reason.」

「Then what's the reason?」

「I don't know. That's why I'm asking.」

「I can't,」他說。

「Can't, or won't?」

「Is there a difference?」

「Yes. 'Can't' means impossible. 'Won't' means choice.」

「I won't.」

「Okay.」

「Okay?」

「What do you want me to say? You made your choice.」

「You're not angry?」

「I'm not surprised. That's different from not angry.」

「Should I go?」他問。

「No. Stay. Help me pack.」

「You want me to help you pack so you can leave me?」

「I'm not leaving you. I'm going to Rome. Those are different things.」

「Are they?」

「Yes. Leaving you would mean ending something. But there's nothing to end. We never started anything.」

「Write to me,」她說。

「I don't write letters.」

「Email, then.」

「I don't write emails either.」

「Then think of me sometimes.」

「I will.」

「No, you won't. You'll go back to your corner in the library. You'll finish your dissertation. You'll become a professor somewhere. And you'll forget.」

「I won't forget.」

「You will. Not on purpose. You'll just... move on. Fill the space with other things. Books. Ideas. That's what you do.」

「I'm not angry,」她說。「I knew what you were from the beginning. I just thought maybe... I don't know what I thought.」

「What did you think?」

「That I might be enough. To make you follow.」

「You are enough.」

「No. If I were enough, you'd follow.」

「Goodbye, Eitan.」

「Goodbye, Elena.」

Astra。

然後她說:「You're thinking about the past.」

「How do you know?」

「Your breathing pattern changes when you think about the past. Slower. Deeper.」

「You were sleeping and still noticed my breathing pattern.」

「It's not voluntary.」

「Who was she?」Astra 問。

「Who?」

「The one you're thinking about.」

「Someone I didn't follow.」

「Where?」

「Rome.」

「Why didn't you follow?」

「I don't know. I thought I knew. I said it was my research, my dissertation, my life here. But that wasn't the real reason.」

「What was the real reason?」

「I was afraid,」他說。「Not of her. Not of Rome. I was afraid of not knowing what would happen. I was afraid of being somewhere unfamiliar. Depending on someone. I was afraid of... needing her.」

「And now?」

「Now I'm here. With you. In a place I never planned to be. Depending on someone I never planned to meet.」

「Are you afraid?」

「Yes.」

「But you're still here. Why?」

「Because leaving would be worse.」

「Worse than fear?」

「Yes.」

「She asked you to follow,」Astra 說。「I never asked. I wouldn't.」

「I know.」

「But if I went somewhere. Would you follow?」

「I don't know,」他說。「But I'd want to. That's new.」

「Is that enough?」

「I don't know that either.」
