Hands

"It's different here."

"How?"

"The light. The color of the water. The way people move." Everything is slower. Like the whole city is taking a nap."

"It's the south. Things are always slower in the south."

"Is that true everywhere?"

Mostly. Heat does that to people. And distance from power centers. When you're far from where decisions are made, you learn to wait."

"I like waiting," 她說。"I never thought I would."

"She says you have sad eyes," 旁邊一個年輕人翻譯。 But beautiful sad. Like the river at night."

"She asks if you want to learn how to weave. She can teach you. Only takes a few minutes."

"She's offering," 他說。"It would be rude to decline."

"Why not."

"She says you learn too fast. Like you already knew. Like you're remembering, not learning."

Astra

"Tell her... I just have good hands."

"She says good hands are a gift. But gifts come with responsibility. You have to use them for good things."

Astra

"Tell her I'm trying."

Centuries of them. It's a time series carved in stone."

"A nilometer. Priests read the river every year—and the reading set the tax rate. High flood, big harvest, heavy tax." The first sensor a state ever pointed at nature. The audit came built in."

Everyone downstream of this staircase got a number."

"What was here?"

"A garrison." Fifth century BCE. Judean mercenaries—soldiers hired by the Persian empire to hold Egypt's southern border. They lived on this island for generations. Families, contracts, marriages, lawsuits. And a temple. Their own temple, to YHW. The only one outside Jerusalem."

"What happened to it?"

"The priests of Khnum happened. Khnum is a ram god—and the Judeans sacrificed lambs. In 410 BCE the priests got the local governor's blessing, raised a mob, and burned the temple to the ground." The survivors wrote letters. To Jerusalem, to Samaria—asking for help rebuilding. Jerusalem's high priest never answered. Three years later a governor finally did: you may rebuild. Meal offerings and incense only. No burnt offerings."

"Meaning?"

"No knife on the altar. They kept the temple by giving up the knife." There's another papyrus, from a few years earlier—the Persian court writing to tell them how and when to keep Passover. An empire scheduling someone's exodus. It's the oldest file of its kind I know of: a community that existed, start to finish, inside someone else's paperwork."

"And then?"

"Persia fell. The pay stopped. Within a generation, the record goes silent. No massacre, no expulsion—just no more documents." A garrison is a very durable thing, right up until nobody needs it."

"What chapter are you on?" 她問。

"Arafa moved into the big house." The Trustee found out what he did the night Gebelawi died—and instead of hanging him, hired him. His bottles work for the enforcers now. Good food, guards at the door. He can't leave."

"And this morning? The line everyone repeats."

"Just after that, a servant woman finds him. She was with Gebelawi at the end. She brings him the old man's last words." Tell the magician his grandfather died pleased with him."

"Good hands,"

Tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow is the village."

"Then next time."

"It's been standing there for three thousand two hundred years," 他說。"It can wait for us."

I am Isis. I gathered what was scattered. I bound what was broken.

Maybe fourteen. The voice walks between them. That's the whole trick of omnipresence—latency management."

"She's very fluent,"

Every one numbered. Every one back in place." Someone kept the inventory."

"In Abydos she was still collecting him," 她說。"Here he's already wrapped."

"That was the last step. Linen, in layers. Knots tied at prescribed stations, amulets bound into the cloth, spells written on the bandages themselves." The binding is what holds the reassembly together. Unwrap him, and he's pieces again."

"So the wrapping isn't a prison."

"It's the seam."

"You've been auditing all day," 他說。"The stall. The island. The magician." Whether the hands are good. Whether the work was."

"There's a line item you haven't counted. You've been wearing it for months—I fitted it myself." Restraining me took hardware. Cloth, then a chain—I remember the inventory.

Took nothing. A man who stays." Every plan you make now has a fixed coordinate in it. Where you are at nightfall—that kind of thing. I narrowed you. I watched you not notice."

"I don't know if mine is the kind that holds you together," 他說,"or the kind that just holds you. And I've decided not to find out."

For your inventory."

"I noticed on March ninth."

Astra

"She says your hair is like a boy's," Eitan 翻譯。"But she likes it."

Fatima

"She says hair is hair. What matters is the head underneath."

"She says the crooked ones hold just as much," Eitan

"It's a zar," 他翻譯。"A neighbor. Her rider is acting up. They do this for her every year."

"Rider?"

Fatima

"The spirits that ride people. You can't drive them out—that's not how it works. You negotiate. The drums call the spirit, each spirit has its own rhythm. When the right rhythm comes, the woman dances. The spirit says what it wants—silver, white cloth, incense. You give it. Then it behaves." She wears the bracelet for life. That's the contract. Men stay away. The sheikha runs it."

"And it works?"

"The rider never leaves. But it can be made polite."

"I can see all of it," 她說。 Every heartbeat. Every breath. The whole mechanism." I can't see what it settles."

"Eitan, are you asleep?"

"No."

"The woman tonight. She renegotiates every year. Terms, payments, jewelry. The rider stays, but she gets to set conditions." My terms were set while I was unconscious. Nobody has ever renegotiated them."

"When the call comes—" 她說。"And it will come. I'll go. You know I'll go."

"I know."

"It's the only test I have. Good hands, doing—"

"A yes that has no no inside it isn't a yes. It's an instruction."

"And if the no was never installed?"

"You know what my hands have already done to keep you in the world." Whatever I say about your choices comes from someone who has already chosen. I don't need you to ever use the no. I need it to exist."

"Why you?"

"It watched millions of people. It replicated one. And then it sent me to—"

"Ask me something easier,"

"Tomorrow we go home,"

"The dates," 她說。"He'll take the dates."

"Fatima's dates?"

"We can't take them through customs anyway."

"Approved."

"Astra?"

"Astra. What's wrong?"

Something big."

"What?"

"I don't know. I can't—" 她皺眉,像是在努力看一個看不清楚的東西。"It's being hidden from me. I can feel the edges, but not the center."

"Mr. Cohan. Ms. Hsiao."

"Who are you?"

"You have a friend in Tel Aviv. Last week, he made a report disappear out of our files." Today he is calling in the favor. You are flying home. Now."

"Our luggage—"

"Will follow. Or it won't." Sir. The plane is waiting."

Nadav

"Six hours ago," 他說,聲音被壓縮過,有點失真,"nuclear early warning systems in seven countries showed simultaneous anomalies."

Eitan

"What kind of anomalies?"

"Various. Several US launch silos received unauthorized unlock commands. Russian early warning radar started reporting missile trajectories that don't exist. China's command chain experienced communication delays. India and Pakistan's border surveillance systems went offline and back online simultaneously. France, the UK. All seven declared arsenals. Each one a minor issue on its own. But together—"

"And ours?"

"That's not a question I can answer on this line."

"Someone is probing the defense systems," Eitan 說。

"Not probing." Positioning. Each 'anomaly' is like a move on a board. Our best analysts are looking at it. They say it's not random, not malfunction. It's... strategy."

We need you."

"I know."

"What can you see?"

"The same thing I've seen since this morning." Edges. The center is closed."

"Is it the Core?"

"Astra."

"I can't see the center, Nadav. I don't know what's standing in it."

"We land in two hours. There will be a briefing. Get some rest—" 他聽見自己這句話,停了一下。"Try."
