守望者

Petah Tikva・Shin Bet Headquarters

「Turn on the news.」

Conference Center Brussels.

Hostage situation.

Forty academics.

「He's stable. Minor injuries. He's not talking much.」

「Has he talked to anyone?」

「No. He just sits there. Looking at his hands.」

Nadav

「Nadav.」

「You look like shit.」

Eitan

「You flew three thousand kilometers to tell me that?」

「I flew three thousand kilometers to make sure you're still alive.」Nadav 「Sounded different on the phone.」

「They said you weren't badly injured.」

「Shrapnel in my back. A few pieces.」Eitan 「Not deep. Will scar.」

「And the rest?」

Eitan

Nadav

「He was standing in front of me.」Eitan 「Two meters. Maybe less.」

Nadav

「He had his gun up. Pointing at a Dutch woman. She was crying.」

「Then his head just—」Eitan 「I didn't hear the shot. Just saw what was inside. On the floor. On my face.」

「They washed it off at the hospital. Seven times. But I still feel—」

「I know.」

Eitan

「I know.」Nadav 重複。「That feeling doesn't go away. You just get used to it being there.」

「The gunmen. Do you know who they were?」

「Some of it.」

「What organization?」

「A small group. Called themselves anti-globalist. But funding sources are complicated.」Nadav 「They had a list. American, British, Israeli intellectuals. Anyone they thought was 'pushing the new world order.'」

「I just wrote a few papers.」

「Those papers have been cited eight hundred times in three years. Your Davos walkout is still being discussed in policy circles.」Nadav 看著他。「You became a symbol the moment you left that room.」

「I left because I had nothing more to say to them.」

「They didn't see it that way.」

「I want a protection assignment.」

「You're in analysis. Not protection.」

「I know. But this is a personal request.」

「What target?」

「Eitan Cohan.」

「He doesn't meet formal protection criteria.」

「I know. I'm not asking for formal assignment. I'm asking for—」Nadav 找詞。「—coordination authority. If something happens, I can mobilize resources.」

「Why?」

「Because he's my friend.」

「How long?」

「Sixteen years.」

Eitan Cohan. Priority watch list. Any threat intelligence reports directly to N. Yaari.

「You have a shadow now.」

「What does that mean?」

「It means if anyone wants to hurt you, they go through me first.」

「I didn't ask for this.」

「I know.」

「You don't have to—」

「I know I don't have to.」Nadav 打斷他。「But you're the one who stands outside the system and criticizes it. I'm the one who stays inside. This is what I can do.」

「Thank you, Nadav.」

「Don't thank me.」他說。「Just—next time there's a conference, tell me first.」

「You're still monitoring me.」

「Not monitoring. Watching.」

「Is there a difference?」

「Monitoring is because you don't trust someone.」Nadav 「Watching is because—」

「Done. Tomorrow morning, ten o'clock.」
