Kfar Shachar

Eitan

"Garlic?"

"I should have checked the label."

"The label wouldn't have listed garlic separately," 他說,沒有回頭,"It's in everything. It's considered part of the base. Like salt."

"Then how do you avoid it."

"I cook everything myself."

"You only eat four things."

"Yes."

"That's a very efficient solution to a very depressing problem."

"I've been here two months and I still can't buy food without making a mistake."

"The first year I was in the States," 他說,"I bought heavy cream instead of milk for two weeks. The cartons looked identical to me."

Two weeks?"

"I thought American milk just tasted different."

You have a doctorate from Princeton."

"Being twenty-two in an American supermarket is a different skill set than academic research." The first sandwich I ordered near campus was the length of my forearm. I genuinely thought there had been a mistake."

"Did you send it back?"

"No. I ate half and took the rest home. It lasted three days."

That's actually efficient."

"That's what I thought."

"The category is," 他繼續說,聲音很平常,"a place has its own logic, and you have to learn it from scratch, and the learning has a cost. Two months is not enough time to learn a place."

"How long does it take."

"Depends on the place. Depends on the person." I've been in this country forty-five years and I still find things I don't understand."

"That's not reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

"It's not bad."

"I know," 他說。

---

"What is this."

"Bourekas." Cheese. Triangles are always cheese. No garlic."

"The bakery near the gas station in Katzrin," 他說,"Thursday mornings. Fresh batch."
