2029・One month after the events

"There's something you need to know before you leave."

"Hello to you too. Where are you?" Flight to Toronto leaves in forty minutes. Make it fast."

"Outside. Working." Forty minutes. I know. That's why I'm calling."

"Eitan, we've been over this. Maya finally agreed to see me. First time in two and a half years. Whatever you want to say—"

"She didn't agree on her own." It's not a miracle. It's a calculation."

"Since when do you calculate?"

"Since I started living with someone who does nothing but."

Nadav

"Oh, this is about her."

"Nadav—"

"What did she do?"

"She may have... influenced certain variables."

"Influenced."Nadav 重複。"What kind of variables?"

"The kind that made your daughter suddenly decide to respond to your message after two years of silence."

二

Nadav

"Explain."他說。

"Ten days ago, Maya received an email. From her old roommate in university. The one she lost touch with."

"Tali?"

"Yes. The email contained photos from their graduation trip to Greece. Photos Maya thought she'd lost when her laptop crashed in 2024."

"So?"

"So one of those photos shows Maya wearing a necklace. A hamsa pendant. Do you remember giving that to her?"

Nadav

"I remember."

"The photo triggered a memory. Maya started looking for the necklace. She found it in a box she hadn't opened since she moved to Toronto. Along with other things. Birthday cards. A note you wrote her when she graduated high school."

"How do you know all this?"

Eitan

"She did this." Your... roommate. She arranged the email. The photos. All of it."

"She prefers 'orchestrated.'"

"Of course she does." How long has she known?"

"Long enough."

"She went through my files."

"She didn't need to. She just listened to the city."

三

Nadav

"Why?"他問。

"I don't know."Eitan I asked her the same thing. She said—"他停頓,像在回憶原話。"'He's been watching you for eleven years. He has a daughter he hasn't seen in two. That's inefficient.'"

"Inefficient."

"Her word, not mine."

"And you're telling me this because...?"

"Because you deserve to know. The choice should be yours."

"The choice of what? Whether to see my daughter?"

"The choice of whether to accept something that was... manufactured. Manipulated. She didn't force Maya to do anything. She just—"

"Opened a door."

"Yes."

"A door that was closed for a reason."

"Was it?"Eitan 的聲音輕了一點。"Or was it just closed because neither of you knew how to open it?"

Final call for flight LY87 to Toronto.

"You know what the worst part is?"Nadav 說。

"What?"

"I've been trying to write that message for two years. Two fucking years. Draft after draft. 'Hi Maya, I know it's been a while.' 'Hi Maya, I'm sorry I wasn't there.' 'Hi Maya, your mother and I—' Nothing worked. Nothing was right."

"And then she replied."

"And then she replied. Out of nowhere. 'Dad, I found the necklace. I've been thinking. Maybe we should talk.'"Nadav 笑了,但很乾。"I thought it was a miracle. I thought maybe the universe finally decided to stop fucking with me."

"Instead it was someone in the middle of nowhere who can hear the city thinking."

"When you put it that way, it almost makes sense."

五

"I told her not to do it."Eitan 說。"For what it's worth."

"And she didn't listen."

"She never listens. Not to me, not to anyone. She processes input and makes her own decisions." Sound familiar?"

"Don't compare my daughter to your—whatever she is."

"I wasn't comparing Maya. I was comparing you."

Nadav

"You have never listened to anyone. Not me, not Orli, not your commanding officers."

"And look where that got me. Divorced. Estranged. Sitting in an airport wondering if my daughter's forgiveness is real or programmed."

Maybe that's not a contradiction."

六

Final boarding call. Flight LY87.

Nadav

"What would you do?" If it was you."

"I wouldn't have let her do it in the first place."

"But she did it anyway."

"Yes."

"So now what?"

Eitan

"Do you remember what you told me, in Brussels? After the attack. When I couldn't stop staring at my hands."

"I told you to stop thinking about how you got there. Start thinking about what you're going to do now."

"Exactly."

"That was different."

"Was it?"

"I have to go."Nadav 說。

"I know."

"If this is a mistake—"

"Then it's your mistake. Not hers. Not Maya's. Yours."

"That's not as comforting as you think it is."

"I wasn't trying to comfort you."Eitan I was trying to tell you to get on the plane, Nadav."

"That's the most direct thing you've said in thirty years."

"I'm improving."

Nadav

Eitan

"Mr. Yaari."

"...You're using his phone."

"He's busy. I'm not."

"You want to say something."

"Yes."

She's wearing the necklace."

"What?"

"Your daughter. She's wearing the hamsa necklace. The one you gave her when she was sixteen." She's been wearing it for 7 days. Since she found it."

Nadav

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you need to know it's real. The memory. The feeling. I didn't create those. I just... reminded her they existed."

"That's not your decision to make."

"No. It was hers. I gave her a photo. She chose to look for the necklace. She chose to read the old cards. She chose to reply to your message." I can open doors. I can't make people walk through them."

"Why do you care?" About me and my daughter. What's in it for you?"

"Eitan talks about you sometimes. Not often. But when he does—"她停頓,"his voice changes. I don't have a word for it. He probably does, but he won't use it."

"What does it sound like."

"Like someone holding something they don't know how to put down." He also said you're the only person he trusts to come get him if everything goes wrong. And that he worries about who comes to get you."

Nadav

"That sentimental bastard."

"His words were more eloquent. But the meaning is the same."

十一

"She's coming."Astra 說。"Sixty meters. Northwest entrance. She's nervous. Heart rate elevated. She keeps touching the necklace."

"Stop."

"Stop what?"

"Stop telling me what she's feeling. Let me see for myself."

"You're right." I apologize."

"Don't apologize. Just—stay out of it. From now on. Whatever happens between me and Maya, it's ours. Not yours."

"Understood."

"Mr. Yaari."

"What?"

"The door is open. But you still have to walk through it."

Nadav

Maya。

hamsa。

"I found the necklace."

"I know."

"I've been wearing it. Every day. Since I found it."

"I know."

"How do you know?"

Nadav

"Someone told me." But it doesn't matter. What matters is you're wearing it."

"It's ugly, you know. Old-fashioned. My friends think it's tacky."

"So why wear it?"

"Because it reminds me of when things weren't so complicated."

Sorry about the mess. I meant to clean up, but—"

"Maya。"

"What?"

"I don't care about the mess."

"Mom said you might say that."

"You told Orli that I would come?"

"She called me. Yesterday. Said if I was going to do this, I should do it properly." She also said you probably haven't eaten anything decent in three years."

"Two and a half."

"That's not better, Dad."

"I know."

"I'm not going to pretend everything is okay." Two years is a long time. A lot of things happened. I was angry. I'm still angry, sometimes."

"I know."

"But I'm also tired of being angry." And I'm tired of not having a dad."

"I don't know how to fix this." I don't know if it can be fixed."

"Maybe it can't." But maybe we can build something new. Something that doesn't need to be the same as before."

*The choice of whether to accept something that was manufactured.*

"You're a terrible liar."Maya

"I'm an intelligence officer. Lying is literally my job."

"Then you should find a new job."

"Maybe I should."

Eitan:*You were right. I got on the plane.*

And?*

*She makes terrible pasta.*

*That's not an answer.*

*Good enough.*

然後:

*I'm glad, Nadav.*

*Me too.*

Tell her I said thank you. Even though I'm still pissed.*

*She's reading over my shoulder. She says 'you're welcome' and 'being pissed is inefficient.'*

*Tell her that emotions aren't about efficiency.*

*She says 'that's exactly the problem with men.'*

*Tell her she sounds like my ex-wife.*

*She's not sure if that's an insult or a compliment.*

*Neither am I. That's the point.*
