守望者

Passover

2029

一

Nadav

You're coming."

"I don't do Pesach."

"You do now. Orli insists. She says you've been hiding in that kibbutz for too long."

"I'm not alone."

"Bring her."

"Nadav—"

"Orli already knows. Don't ask me how. Women know things. She's already calculating how much matzah ball soup to make."

"She doesn't eat much."

"Then Orli will spend the whole evening trying to feed her. It'll be entertaining." Sunday. Six o'clock. Don't be late."

"What's Pesach?"

"Passover. Jewish holiday. Celebrates the exodus from Egypt."

"The one with the ten plagues."

"You've read the Old Testament?"

"I've read everything."

"Nadav invited us. His ex-wife insists."

"Us."

"Yes."

"I've never been to a religious ceremony."

"It's not exactly a ceremony. More like a very long dinner with a lot of rituals and wine."

"How long?"

"Three hours. Sometimes four. Depends on how fast people read."

"Four hours of sitting?"

"With breaks. And food. And singing."

"Singing."

"Traditional songs. Some of them are hundreds of years old."

"You don't want to go," 她說。

"I haven't been to a Seder in fifteen years."

"Why?"

"Because I stopped believing that rituals have meaning."

"And now?"

"Now I'm not sure what I believe."

三

Sunday。

Astra

"Where did you get that?"

"Online. Two days ago."

"You bought a dress for Pesach."

"You said it's a formal occasion."

"I said it's a long dinner."

"Same thing."

You'll hit something."

Orli

"Finally,"

"You're too thin."

"I've been told."

"Tonight you eat. Properly. No excuses."

"I warned you."

The script for tonight."

"There's a script?"

"Fifteen steps. Very specific order."

"Hence the name. Seder. Order."

"You researched."

"I research everything."

"I won't bite."

"Are you Uncle Eitan's girlfriend?"

"I'm his friend," 她說。"Who happens to be a girl."

Seder

"What does it mean?"

"Sanctification of the day. Thanking God for bringing us to this moment."

"You don't believe in God."

"I don't. But the words are still beautiful."

Orli

"Dip it in the salt water."

"What does the salt water represent?"

"Tears," Orli 說。"Of our ancestors. When they were slaves."

Astra

"That's a lot of tears."

"Four hundred years of slavery. That's a lot of suffering."

Nadav

The children will look for it later. Whoever finds it gets a prize."

"What kind of prize?"

"Usually money. Or chocolate."

"This is a strange tradition."

"Most traditions are strange if you think about them too hard."

Eitan

"The youngest asks. The elders answer. It's a teaching moment."

"What if the youngest doesn't want to ask?"

"Then someone asks for them."

"What if no one wants to answer?"

"Then the story dies."

"That's why you keep telling it. Even when you don't believe."

"Stories survive because people repeat them. Not because they're true."

"Why do we remove wine?" 她問。

"Because our joy is diminished," Eitan 說。"Even in victory, we remember that people died. Even our enemies."

"That's unexpectedly humane."

"Judaism has its moments."

十一

Orli

Matzah ball soup。

"How do I eat this?"

"Spoon. Very carefully. The balls are soft."

"Good?"

"It's..." Warm."

"That's the point."

Orli

"More?"

"I haven't even finished this one."

"Finish it first."

十二

Brisket。

Orli

"That's all?"

"I don't eat much."

"You don't eat enough."

"It's delicious. But my stomach is small."

"She eats what she wants," 他說。"I don't force her."

"Maybe you should."

"Maybe you should respect her autonomy."

Astra

"Are you defending me?"

"I'm stating facts."

"From you, that's defending."

Nadav

Afikoman。

"Should I help them?"

"That would be cheating."

"I can see where it is."

"How?"

"Nadav's body temperature slightly elevated when they got close to the left side of the room. Micro-expressions. He's a terrible liar."

Eitan

"Don't tell them."

"I won't. But it's obvious."

"What is it?"

"Nothing. Just..." I never had this."

"Pesach?"

"Watching kids play."

Hallel。

"What are they singing about?"

"Praise. Gratitude. Hope."

"Hope for what?"

"Next year in Jerusalem."

"We're in Israel. Jerusalem is two hours away."

"It's not about geography. It's about..." Being complete. Being home. Being free."

"Are you free?"

"More than I was," 他終於說。"Less than I want to be."

"That's honest."

"You asked."

十五

Seder

"You come back," 她說。"Shabbat. Next month. Any time. You understand?"

"I understand."

"Good." Take care of him. He forgets to eat."

"I know."

"Good."

"For what?"

"For bringing me."

"I understand now," 她說。"Why people do this. Every year. Same story. Same food. Same songs."

"Why?"

"Because repetition is a form of survival." The story stays alive because someone keeps telling it. The tradition survives because someone keeps doing it. Even when they don't believe. Even when it feels meaningless."

"And now?"

"Now I think..." Maybe meaning doesn't come before. Maybe it comes after. Because you kept doing it. Because you didn't stop."

"That sounds like something I would say."

"I learned from the best."

"Next year," 她說。

"What?"

"Next year in Jerusalem. That's what they say, right? At the end of Seder."

"Yes."

"So." Next year. We go again."

Next year."

Next year。

Chag Sameach。
