Dust and Sand

Green Library

Green Library

Eitan Cohan

第一筆:The Algorithm Trap, call number HM851 .C64 2019. 館藏地:Main Stacks。狀態:Available。

第二筆:Silence as Resistance, call number HM846 .C64 2022. 館藏地:Main Stacks。狀態:Checked out, due Feb 3。

Cohan, Eitan (2010). Surveillance and Sovereignty: The Evolution of State Control in the Digital Age. Doctoral dissertation, Princeton University.

Main Stacks

The Algorithm Trap by Eitan Cohan。

For those who refuse to be legible.

"The trap is not that algorithms control us. The trap is that we believe the choice is between control and chaos. Between total transparency and total opacity. Between being inside the system or outside it. But these are false binaries. The real question is: can we exist in the threshold?"

yes

Dissertations & Theses

「Excuse me, I'm looking for a dissertation.」

「Title or author?」

「Author. Eitan Cohan. Princeton, 2010.」

「We have it in the database. You can access it online, or I can print the abstract for you. We don't have the physical copy here, but Princeton should have it in their archive.」

「Can I see the online version?」

「Sure. Use any computer, search ProQuest Dissertations. It should be open access.」

Eitan Cohan, Surveillance and Sovereignty

Surveillance and Sovereignty: The Evolution of State Control in the Digital Age

Eitan Cohan

A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of Princeton University in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Recommended for Acceptance by the Department of History

Adviser: Professor Philip Alderman

June 2010

"This dissertation examines how state surveillance transforms from a function of sovereignty into a replacement for it."

"I argue that in the digital age, the capacity to observe has superseded the capacity to govern. States no longer need to control territory; they need to control information flows. This represents not an enhancement of sovereign power, but its dissolution into something new—a post-sovereign surveillance regime that operates through prediction rather than prohibition."

"The question is not whether we can escape surveillance. We cannot. The question is whether we can create practices of opacity within total visibility—whether we can be present without being captured, legible without being known, engaged without being absorbed. This is the political project of our time."

Strategic opacity.

yes
